Shakshuka Recipe
It is both delicious and eye-catching. The generous addition of herbs and spices energizes every mouthful of shakshuka. It’s built on a foundation of sweet, acidic tomatoes and savory, poached eggs.
Shakshuka is a unique culinary experience in terms of creativity and texture. It has the buttery soft eggs, the harissa’s intense heat, and the herbs’ delicious aroma.
What is Shakshuka?
Shakshuka, a symbol of both the heat and warmth of North Africa as well as the Middle East, is a dish that originated in the Maghreb region (Northwest Arabic region) of Africa. This dish is made up of poached eggs and served with a delicious sauce of tomatoes, olive oils, and peppers.
The entire dish is then seasoned with a generous amount of spices, including paprika, cayenne pepper, and fiery harissa. It’s often served right off the heat in an iron skillet.
Step-by-Step Instructions
Step 1 – Heat 2 tbsp olive oil and thinly sliced onion in a large saucepan. Allow simmering for 15 minutes. Adjust heat as necessary to avoid burning.
Step 2 Add the spices (cumin and paprika, pinch cayenne, pinch sugar, salt and pepper to your liking). About 1/2 teaspoon salt and 1/2 teaspoon black pepper were used. Stir everything for about 1-2 minutes. Then add the canned plum tomato. Cook for another 15 minutes.
Step 3 Once your vegetables are softened, and the tomatoes have lost their acidic taste, you can use a spoon to make the wells for eggs. Since we are using six eggs, we will make 6 wells to allow the eggs to rest in.
Step 4 Crack the eggs into each well (as seen below).
Step 5 Cover the pan with a lid and cook the eggs to the desired doneness. They took about 5-6 minutes to cook.
Step 6 Now, it’s time for the toppings. Let’s start with crumbled Feta cheese.
Step 7 We then add fresh parsley.
Step 8 We also love to make harissa sauce for the shakshuka. But that’s up to your taste! Shakshuka is delicious even without it.
Toast the garlic cloves in a 2 tbsp olive oil mixture for 1-2 minutes on medium heat. Cook for another few minutes, then add 2 tbsp harissa. It can be served over the shakshuka, but it is quite spicy!
You can make your harissa sauce or buy one from a store. Or you can eat your shakshuka plain when it’s ready to be served.
As we have already mentioned, shakshuka is often served directly from the pan to the table in a cast-iron pan. Enjoy a large portion of the delicious sauce, egg, and some crusty white bread to soak up all that spicy sauce.
This North African classic is sure to delight. Shakshuka is a rich, spicy, and deep-flavored breakfast dish that can be enjoyed with friends or family as a meal or for lunch.
